How I Work

Working with Individuals

I am a Person Centred Counsellor and I work in a way that enables you to feel safe, not judged and free to talk about whatever is distressing you at the moment. Each client is unique and I will always tailor my approach in the way that meets your needs best. I integrate Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) in to my work which helps to focus on your thoughts, emotions and behaviours and works towards moving you out of the vicious cycle of negative thoughts and unhelpful behaviours. I also use Transactional Analysis (TA) which helps you become more conscious of your thoughts and behaviours which helps you understand yourself better and also to improve communication with others.

I work with you and your present distress, and at times this may involve talking about your feelings and explore where they may have originated from. At times we may talk about your past and how it affects our present. Our ultimate goal is to work towards alleviating your current distress to a point where it feels you can move on in a more positive direction.

I offer both short and long term counselling which is something that is decided by you and how you feel counselling is helping you. I will always conduct regular reviews which will enable us to look back over our work together and address any other areas that you would like to concentrate on. Each session is 50 minutes long and can be either, face to face, via Zoom or telephone.

I have experience in supporting clients with a range of difficulties and have worked with issues including, but not limited to,

Anxiety

Depression

Adverse Childhood Experiences

Bereavement

Relationship Counselling

Self Esteem

Trauma and PTSD

Loneliness

Suicidal Ideation

Family Conflict

Domestic Violence

I have a particular speciality in offering support to adults who witnessed domestic violence as children.

You may have witnessed domestic violence as a child and did not receive any help or support to talk about your experiences. You may have had times when you have felt sad, anxious or unsafe and have not made the link to your childhood trauma. You may have had times when you felt extremely nervous and on edge and did not understand why.  You may have also struggled in forming close attachments with others.

Witnessing domestic violence can often lead to upsetting behaviours and feelings that manifest in adulthood. This can also result in difficulties in forming attachments with your care givers and in forming healthy adult relationships. The impact of witnessing domestic violence on children is immense and can often affect them for the rest of their lives.

I am here to help you talk about your experiences and offer a safe space to explore your feelings and address whatever difficulties you are currently coping with.

Working with Couples

Most couples come to counselling as they cannot work their problems out together and feel that the relationship is in a perpetual cycle of conflict or disconnection. Working with couples is different to working with individuals as the relationship is the client and the aim being to understand the issues within the relationship and then to address them and strive for a better future for you both.

Working with couples, I draw on different modalities such as Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy and Imago Therapy which help address the individual difficulties that you both may bring. I focus on improving communication which will help you to connect in a more honest and authentic way which can help to forge a deeper understanding of each other. I work with repairing relationships after trust has been broken and providing strategies that provide positive and long lasting changes that will benefit the couple and the relationship. If you have both decided to end your relationship I can also facilitate a gentle and collaborative parting. I help couples explore their problems in a structured and empathic environment to find a productive way forward.
